Q: Why did you join SMPS? And how long have you been a member?
A: I originally joined in 2012 when I entered the AEC industry as a public relations coordinator but shifted gears into a consultancy for a social media agency only two years later. I was REALLY green in marketing on the whole back in 2013, but especially in AEC marketing, so SMPS was an incredibly insightful and a valuable professional resource. Rejoining in 2020 felt like coming home after I found myself in my return to an AEC marketing role. Especially during those times, it was good to have a group so dedicated to connecting with others!
Q: Why did you start/choose a career in professional services Marketing/BD?
A: I was naturally inclined towards sales and marketing since I was old enough to have a job. I also followed in my parents’ footsteps, working first in the service industry, then in AEC. Marketing came naturally, but landing a role in AEC at the start was unintentional. I had originally pitched an internship to the construction management firm my mom worked for, only to be offered a position a month into my internship. I was already diving deep into projects there and enjoying my work, so I knew it was a good fit.
Q: What advice would you give your younger self about your career choices?
A: You’re doing so much better than you think you are. I know it feels awkward, but that’s only something you’re telling yourself. Give yourself a break, think bigger, and keep learning.
Q: What is your favorite hobby or pastime?
A: I lived on an island where we longboarded for fun and met up with some of my closest friends every day for sunset. That was such a precious time in life! I still longboard, but not as often as I used to.
Q: What’s the best advice you were ever given? Who was it from?
A: It’s actually a quote by Lawrence K. Fish that found me. “Find life experiences and swallow them whole. Travel. Meet many people. Go down some dead ends and explore dark alleys. Try everything. Exhaust yourself in the glorious pursuit of life.”
Q: What has been your favorite event or experience that was offered to you by your company, professional organization, etc. that either aided in professional or personal development?
A: I was sent on a solo assignment to cover an entire music festival in St. Augustine once. I was terrified, ha! I had never traveled by myself, let alone attended a big event like that by myself. I finessed my way backstage and got some of the best footage of the event all night, without a press pass, just by making small talk with the AV team. My client was awestruck. She was the primary event coordinator and even she couldn’t get her team access backstage. Professionally, this taught me it really is all in your networking and relationships. Personally, this taught me to loosen up a little and let life happen! It’s going to anyway!
Q: What is your favorite or most recent book you’ve read?
A: Anatomy of the Spirit by Caroline Myss. I recommend it to everyone and have probably handed out 12 copies in my lifetime. Every time I pick it up, I think I read something new I didn’t catch the first time.
