A message from the President

Marketers build other people’s reputations in support of the firm’s overall strategic goals. Rarely in the limelight, they focus the spotlights and flip all the switches.” (William L. Peel, Jr., AIA, Marshall Erdman & Associates). This shrewd quote appears in the final pages of the SMPS Markedium. Marketing in the AEC industry can sometimes feel like a rather ungrateful profession. If we do our jobs well, everyone’s eyes should be affixed elsewhere—on our project managers, designers, and builders. They should be admiring the projects that we beautifully and succinctly showcase in our proposals and on our websites. They should be talking about our extensive capabilities and solid reputations during strategic teaming conversations. It’s what we do. We do it well, and as a result, we help our firms to flourish. While that’s going on, those brilliant, dedicated, and humble professionals who are focusing the lights and flipping the switches remain behind the scenes, rarely receiving the applause that they’re due.

While this sentiment resonated with me, it also struck me because it reminded me of the real strength of SMPS—while you’re busy shining the light on your firms, we are committed to shining the light on you. Through member spotlights, tailored professional development and education opportunities, and an amazing network of peers at the ready to lift each other up during both highs and lows, SMPS Tampa Bay wants to make sure that our members feel seen and valued. You are all rockstars. Know it. Own it.

September marks the beginning of a new year for SMPS Tampa Bay, and new chapter in our approach to ensuring that our members receive the maximum benefit for their commitment to this organization. We have built the MOST kick-butt board this year! They are ambitious, they are passionate, and I’m honored to be a part of it. I have every confidence that you are going to be impressed with all they bring to you and our local AEC community. A few suggestions on how to make the most of it:

  • Take a few minutes each month to review this newsletter for details on what events are coming up. I also encourage you to check out our events calendar here. We expect to have a full 12-month look-ahead posted by the end of September.
  • Follow us on LinkedIn, Instagram, and/or Facebook to stay up to date on all our latest news.
  • Become a volunteer. Yes, we’re asking for free labor. Yes, I know you have no free time to give. But I also can 100% guarantee that you will get the most out of your membership by working with other members and helping us shape our programs. Please contact me if you’re interested; we have opportunities to get involved from individual event support to full committee positions.
